- SOUNDING: OCEAN DIARY - NEW YORK CITY
The Lincoln Center Festival OPENING NIGHT is Tuesday, July 12 when the Merce Cunningham
Dance Company gives the first of five performances of Ocean, the final
collaboration between Cunningham and legendary composer John Cage, which
had its New York premiere in the inaugural year of the Lincoln Center
Festival in 1996. Ocean, inspired by the multi-layered writings of James
Joyce (an influence on much of the two collaborators' work) is performed in
the round with the dancers on stage, surrounded by the audience, which is
in turn surrounded by 112 musicians. Simulataneous performance of David Tudor's score is performed utilizing a multichannel array of moveable loudspeakers hanging from above. Performances will take place in the
new Rose Theater.
