His rich baritone is a marvel ..." -- Time Out , January 1998 During the past thirty years, new music baritone Thomas Buckner has achieved notable success as performer, producer, and promoter of some of the most adventurous music of the 20th century. Through his live and recorded work with both established and emerging contemporary composers and improvisers, Buckner continues to be a pioneer in a wide range of musical contexts, mixing genres and breaking barriers in his on-going pursuit of the yet-to-be-imagined. Buckner has performed his own concerts, and in association with a wide variety of ensembles, throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. Recent performances include a duo concert with renowned pianist Cecil Taylor at the Festival of Music of Extended Duration in Prague (Czech Republic), the world premiere of Roscoe Mitchell's 'Fallen Heroes' (performed with the Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble at Lincoln Center, New York City), a duo concert with pianist Varyan Weston at the Zyd Netherlands Jazz Festival, the world premiere of Robert Ashley's 'When Famous Last Words Fail You' (performed with the American Composers Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, New York City), a performance with the Alvin Lucier Ensemble at Art Summit 1998 (Jakarta, Indonesia), the European premiere of Morton Subotnik's media poem 'Intimate Immensity' (Karlsruhe, Germany), a concert with tenor William Brown at the University of North Florida, a performance with First Meeting (featuring Roscoe Mitchell and Borah Bergman at the Tampere Jazz Happening in Tampere, Finland), the world premiere of Robert Ashley's new opera 'Dust' (in Yokohama, Japan), and several other concerts in Japan, including appearances at the Festival Beyond Innocence in Kobe, and at Kithara Hall in Sapporo with Aki Takehashi, and Harmony Hall in Nagano with Ushio Torikai. In 1996, he was awarded the American Music Center's Letter of Distinction, in recognition of his contributions to the field of contemporary music.
